There were talks that Shastri might have to undergo the re-appointment process. “I don’t think so that it will jeopardize the selection of Shastri. I am not sure though. Even we had selected the coach when there was this conflict issue,” Ganguly said.

It is to be noted that the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), headed by Kapil Dev, which retained Shastri as the head coach was found to be conflicted and all the members of the panel quit their positions. COA Chief Vinod Rai had also confirmed that Shastri would not have to undergo the process again.

In 2016 and 2017, Ganguly was himself a part of CAC that picked Anil Kumble and Shastri as coach and next year, all the members of the committee resigned due to the same issue.

It is confirmed that Shastri will complete his second term as team India’s head coach and will serve till the team till November 2021.

A re-appointment after 2021 will not be possible for Shastri as he will be 59 by then and as per BCCI’s rules, a coach should be below the age of 60.

Bharat Arun (bowling coach), Vikram Rathour (batting coach), R Sridhar (fielding coach) and other members of Shastri’s staff will also continue to keep their positions. Arun and Sridhar had joined team India alongside Shastri and weren’t part of the staff when Shastri was replaced for one year.

Rathour is the new member in the coaching staff, who took over the position prior to the South Africa T20Is. He had replaced former India all-rounder Sanjay Bangar in the job.

Bangar had joined team India’s coaching staff in 2014 during the limited-overs series in England – along with Shastri. He kept his position for next five years and was expected to be replaced when the board advertised for the positions in 2019.
