India batting star Rohit Sharma has recalled the 2019 World Cup while expressing his disappointment over the way Team India fell short of their target in the tournament. The right-handed batsman had a stunning campaign as he finished the tournament as its leading run-scorer.
Widely regarded as the best limited-overs opener in the world, Rohit Sharma started the tournament by scoring a match-winning, unbeaten century against South Africa, and followed it with four more three-digit scores, including back to back ones against England, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
Rohit Sharma’s five centuries are the most ever by a batsman in a single World Cup, beating Kumar Sangakkara’s tally of four in 2015. When Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of the tournament after injuring his thumb during the match against Australia, the onus was on Rohit Sharma to deliver and he did not disappoint. He was one of the reasons behind India’s top-spot finish at league stage.

He scored 648 runs in nine innings – the highest in the tournament – and threatened to break Sachin Tendulkar’s all-time World Cup record of 673 runs before India’s journey came to an end with a thrilling loss to New Zealand in the semifinal. Rohit Sharma, on Monday, recalled last year’s World Cup and posted an emotional tweet. After the BCCI posted a tweet to celebrate Rohit Sharma’s five centuries in the tournament, the batsman wrote that he would have loved the team to go further. He also stated that winning the World Cup is still his dream, writing:
“Wish we could go little further than where it ended. Nevertheless my dream is still to win world cups.”
