3 Instances When Wives Of Indian Cricketers Got Embroiled In Controversies

In India, cricket is much more than just a sport; it’s more like a religion for the masses. The fans of Indian cricketers always keep track of their favourite players through the help of social media, but in the digital age, this tends to create a big problem.

Along with players, their wives also come into the limelight sometimes, and that too for all the wrong reasons. In the past couple of years, people have been debating if the wives of Indian cricketers should travel with them on various tours.

There has been a big controversy surrounding Virat Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma when fans trolled her, called her back luck for the Indian team. Incidents such as these are not very pleasant, but it all happens. Apart from these, the wives of Indian cricketers have been creating headlines for some time now.

Here are three times when wives of Indian cricketers got embroiled in controversies:

3) Mohammed Shami’s wife, Hasin Jahan

The wife of Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, Hasin Jahan rocked the cricketing fraternity in March 2018 when she accused Shami of having an extra-marital affair.

Jahan subsequently filed an FIR in a police station in Kolkata against Shami and some of his family members, on the grounds of domestic violence, attempt to murder, and other serious claims. She later shared screenshots of Shami’s chats with other women on Facebook.

“You can ask the neighbours how they (Shami’s family) behaved with me. I was silent because he has been asking for a divorce for two years. He has been torturing me, he tried everything to make me leave him,” said Jahan in one of her interviews. 

Shami later responded by saying that it was all a conspiracy against him, a plot to defame him. His wife got embroiled in controversy, and now the couple is currently engaged in a legal battle.

2) MS Dhoni’s wife Sakshi Dhoni

The wife of former Indian skipper Sakshi Dhoni came under the scanner in July 2019 after her name started to appear with the troubled real estate developers Amrapali group. Dhoni served as the brand ambassador for them, and he too has been linked with this whole fiasco.

Actually, the Amrapali Group has been accused of fraud, by siphoning money paid by approximately 42 thousand home buyers and of cheating them, by not completing housing projects for which the developer had accepted payments.

Sakshi got embroiled in controversy as she was the director of Amrapali Mahi Developers Private Limited (AMDPL) as per an audit report. The report further claimed that Dhoni’s wife also held 25 per cent shares in the company.

After the whole incident, Dhoni cut his ties with the real estate group, and also sued them for unpaid dues worth INR 150 crores. The Supreme court cancelled Amrapali group’s registration as part of its ruling last year.

1) Virat Kohli’s wife, Anushka Sharma

In October 2019, former Indian cricketer Farokh Engineer caused a massive uproar when he called out the Indian selectors for being biased. He also alleged that during the ODI World Cup, last year, he saw one of the selectors serving tea to Virat Kohli’s wife, Anushka Sharma.

“I didn’t even know one of the selectors during the World Cup and I asked him ‘who the hell he was’, because he was wearing the India blazer and he said he was one of the selectors,” Engineer told Times of India in an interview.

“All they were doing was getting Anushka Sharma cups of tea. I feel people with the stature of Dilip Vengsarkar should be in the selection committee,” he added.

Mrs Kohli responded stunningly, saying that her name should not be used to sensationalize the matter. Anushka also revealed in a statement on Twitter, that she attended just one match at the World Cup 2019, wherein she was in the family box and not the selectors’ box.
