Kolkata Knight Riders sprung a big surprise on Wednesday with their decision of sending Sunil Narine to bat at number four against Chennai Super Kings. As expected, the hard-hitting tail-ender was not sent out to open the innings after his failures in the previous games.
When Rahul Tripathi came out to open the innings with Shubman Gill, it was expected that Narine would bat in the lower order. But to everyone’s surprise, he was sent out to bat at number four ahead of the likes of Eoin Morgan, Andre Russell and captain Dinesh Karthik.
Narine did not score big but did manage to swing his bat to score 17 off 9 balls. In the end, he was the joint second highest score of the innings as the likes of Russell, Morgan and Karthik could not deliver with the bat. KKR, nonetheless, went on to win the game by ten wickets.
Batting first, they posted 167 in the allotted 20 overs. Tripathi starred with the bat, scoring 81 off 51 deliveries to help KKR post a challenging total. In reply, CSK could only manage 157 for 5.
Ben Stokes, Yuvraj Singh engage in banter:
Yuvraj Singh and Ben Stokes were engaged in a hilarious banter on Twitter after KKR decided to send Narine ahead of Morgan. It all started when Ben Stokes took to Twitter to question the move, writing: “Narine before Morgan???”
Yuvraj Singh was quick to leap in defence of fellow allrounder Narine as he hilariously wrote: “Yeah it’s like yuvraj before stokes ! Sometimes u got let the all-rounders go before , bowlers who can bat before a proper batsman to slog.”
Ben Stokes, meanwhile, arrived in UAE earlier this month and is currently following the mandatory six-day quarantine period. He will be allowed to join the Rajasthan Royals squad only after he returns negative on all the three COVID-19 tests.
