Former India batsman Yuvraj Singh has taken a sly dig at the Indian Premier League (IPL), saying that the cash-rich league takes away the focus from the youngsters. The legendary batsman said that young cricketers nowadays do not focus much on red-ball cricket because of the IPL.

The big money on offer in the IPL does not let the youngsters take four-day cricket or Test cricket seriously, according to the ex-India batsman. He also said that youngsters nowadays do not give too much respect to their seniors as he urged the upcoming players to be more respectful.

“IPL offers big money and it takes away the focus (from the youngsters). Not the current lot. They want to play Tests but the younger lot, who play one-day cricket mostly, their focus is to play IPL and not four-day cricket for the states,” Yuvraj Singh told Sportstar.

“From the interaction with the youngsters, you realize that they can do with more respect for the seniors. It is not the same that we gave to our seniors. There has to be a certain amount of respect towards the seniors, who have taught you so much,” he added.

Well, Yuvraj Singh knows it very well how the IPL impacts the players. The former India batsman played in the league for more than a decade. Unlike his illustrious international career, he did not have a very good track record in the IPL although he won the title once while being with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016.

The World Cup-winner retired from international and domestic cricket last year after failing to make the cut for India’s World Cup squad. After retiring, he played in the Global T20 Canada and Abu Dhabi T10 League.
