Former Pakistan batsman Zaheer Abbas was one of the best produced by the nation and recently entered into the ICC Hall of Fame for his achievements. Often dubbed as the Asian Bradman, Zaheer Abbas averaged 44.79 and 47.62 in Tests and ODIs respectively. As far as the current generation goes, the 73-year old feels that Pakistan must learn from their Asian counterparts, India.

The Indian cricketers have perhaps set the benchmark not only in ancient times but also the present ones. From Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar to the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma at present, the men in blue have cultivated some of the most prolific run-getters in the game. On the other hand, Pakistan has suffered a dearth of quality batsmen, who are match-winners in recent times.
Zaheer Abbas hailed India’s batting line-up, which has a crisis man every time it undergoes trouble. The right-handed batsman wants his countrymen to have the same kind. Abbas, who mustered 34843 runs is the highest run-getter in first-class cricket from Pakistan.
“You look at how their (India’s) batsmen perform nowadays. Whenever the team is in trouble, somebody comes and scores. This is what I want Pakistan to learn,” Abbas said as quoted by Hindustan Times.
“Gavaskar used to say that ‘you should always learn from the opposition too’” : Zaheer Abbas
The retired batsman added that there was a time when Indian cricketers learned from Pakistan and Sunil Gavaskar emphasized learning from the opposition too. Hence, Zaheer feels it is time Pakistan acquire some of their talents as well. The Punjab-born cricketer cited Rohit Sharma’s example and stressed on learning from him by looking at his technique. He stated that during his playing days, he learnt batting by watching the likes of Hanif Mohammad and Rohan Kanhai instead of training with them.
“They(India) have learned this from us. What we taught everyone has been picked up very well but now it’s time we have to learn something from them. Gavaskar used to say that ‘you should always learn from the opposition too’. If you say that Rohit Sharma is good. Then you should learn from him. Watch him, see how plays, observe his technique. I used to watch and learn from Hanif Mohammad, Rohan Kanhai. I didn’t go and train with them, I just learned after observing their batting,” he added.
