Former Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Amir might be eligible to play in the Indian Premier League’s next season IPL 2022. Mohammad Amir retired from international cricket in December 2020 announcing that he will not play for Pakistan in the future. The 29-year-old pacer recently applied for British Citizenship. Pakistan cricketers are not allowed to play in IPL due to the tense political relations between India and Pakistan.
If Mohammad Amir gets British Citizenship, he might get a chance to play in IPL 2022. In the past, former Pakistan cricketer Azhar Mahmood was able to play in IPL as he registered for the tournament as a British citizen. However, Amir will find it hard to make it to IPL 2022 due to several reasons. Here we look at 5 reasons why Mohammad Amir won’t be able to play in IPL 2022.
5 Reasons Why Mohammad Amir Won’t Be Able To Play In IPL 2022
1. It will create A Strenuous Relation Between BCCI And PCB

BCCI (Board Of Control For Cricket in India) and PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) have been at loggerheads for conducting a bilateral series for almost 9 years now. India and Pakistan last faced each other in a bilateral series in 2012-13 when Pakistan national team toured India for a two-match ODI and three-match T20I series.
Since then, BCCI has cut bilateral cricket relations with PCB due to the political tensions between both nations. however, both countries have faced each other in ICC tournaments. BCCI has also barred Pakistan cricketers from playing in the Indian Premier League. If BCCI allows Mohammad Amir in IPL, it will create a strenuous relation between BCCI and PCB, something which BCCI has avoided so far.
2. BCCI’s Strict Policy Against Defamed Cricketers

Mohammad Amir was charged with spot-fixing charges in August 2010. Amir bowled two deliberate no-balls in a match against England. Amir, along with Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif, was found guilty of spot-fixing. Amir was handed a five-year ban for his act by ICC. BCCI has a very strict policy against defamed cricketers. In the past two, players who are found to be involved in spot-fixing and match-fixing have never made a comeback to Indian cricket. Since Mohammad Amir has also been involved in spot-fixing, he might not be able to play in IPL 2022.
3. No British Citizenship

Mohammad Amir has retired from international cricket and has informed that he has applied for British Citizenship. The 29-year-old has also asserted that he has 7-8 years of more cricket left in him. Mohammad Amir has applied for British Citizenship but he has not got it yet. He only has ILR which is an Indefinite Leave to Remain. A person can only be eligible for British Citizenship after he has completed his ILR period of at least one year.
Therefore, at present, there is uncertainty about Mohammad Amir getting British Citizenship before IPL 2022. Moreover, IPL 2022 will also witness a mega auction that will happen one or two months ahead of IPL 2022. Hence, Mohammed Amir might not get his British Citizenship on time and take part in IPL 2022.
4. His Own Statement About Giving Time To Family

Recently, Mohammad Amir stated that he wants to play cricket in the future but his family will be his priority. He had said that he wants to spend maximum time with his family in the United Kingdom. IPL is a long tournament where players have to play for almost 2 months straight. Therefore, Mohammad Amir might not participate in IPL 2022 so as to spend time with his family members. Amir had also said that at the moment he is not thinking about participating in IPL 2022.
5. Poor Performance Since Making A Comeback

After making his comeback to international cricket in 2016 after serving a ban, Mohammad Amir has not shown impressive performance. In 2019, the left-arm pacer played 2 Tests, 15 ODIs, and 7 T20Is, and scalped 8, 23, and 7 wickets respectively. Earlier in 2018, he played 4 Tests, 10 ODIs, and 9 T20Is, in which he picked 16, 3, and 14 wickets respectively. After his comeback, he has played 32 T20I matches for Pakistan in which he picked 36 wickets.
In 2020, he remained wicketless in the two T20I matches he played. Therefore, Amir has not been able to make a mark in the bowling for the national side in the last few years. Therefore, his stats might not attract IPL franchises and he will not be able to make it to the final list of IPL 2022 auction.
