After having scripted one of India’s greatest-ever triumphs in its storied Test history- an unprecedented 2-1 series win in Australia- the focus of the Men in Blue will now turn to England as they lock horns with the ‘Three Lions’ in a full-fledged series consisting of four ICC Test Championship Tests, five Twenty20 Internationals and three ODIs.
The England tour of India will kickstart with the much-awaited Test series, the first match of which will be played at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from February 05. The Test series will be crucial to both sides’ fortunes- especially India’s- as they aim to finish in the top-two in the ICC World Test Championship table.
India, thanks to their 2-1 heist in Australia, are currently at the numero-uno spot but they still need to win by at least 2-0 to ensure that they finish ahead of New Zealand and book their final for the summit clash at Lord’s.
England, on the other hand, besides winning the ongoing Test in Sri Lanka, will have to win by at least 3-0 if they have to harbour any thoughts of making it to Lord’s. The task is arduous given the fact that India is an impregnable force on home soil. The Men in Blue have dropped just one Test on home soil since the start of 2013 they have won 8 of their last 13 home Tests [5 draws] since losing to Australia in Pune in 2017. England will also be looking to avenge the 0-4 drubbing that they suffered at the hands of India during their last tour in 2016.
As far as the limited-overs series is concerned, while the ODI rubber will be important for England as they aim to gain points in ODI Super-league, all the focus will be on the five-match T20I series as both sides aim to build-up for the upcoming T20 World Cup in India later in the year
