Gujarat Lions team participated in IPL 2016 for the first time along with Pune Supergiant. Both the franchises replaced Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who were suspended from the tournament for two seasons IPL 2016 and IPL 2017. Therefore, Gujarat Lions were part of the tournament in these two seasons. The franchise reached the playoffs in IPL 2016.

IPL 2016

Gujarat Lions was led by Suresh Raina in IPL 2016 and reached the playoffs in the season. They topped the points table after the group stage. The team lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore in Qualifier 1 match and then lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 2 match. As a result, they finished on the 3rd spot in the tournament.

The team played 16 matches in the tournament, winning 9 and losing 7. They managed to score 2450 runs in the season. Suresh Raina and Aaron Finch were the top two run-scorers of the team with 399 runs and 393 runs respectively. Raina batted in 15 innings while Finch played 12 innings.

IPL 2017

The team was again led by Suresh Raina in IPL 2017. This time, the franchise could not show stupendous performance like the previous season and finished on the 7th spot in the points table. They smashed 2406 runs in the season. Once again, Suresh Raina was the highest run-scorer for the team with 442 runs in 14 innings. Dinesh Karthik was the 2^nd highest run-getter for the team with 361 runs in 13 innings.
