Gujarat Lions team participated in IPL 2016 for the first time along with Pune Supergiant. Both the franchises replaced Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who were suspended from the tournament for two seasons IPL 2016 and IPL 2017. Therefore, Gujarat Lions were part of the tournament in these two seasons. The franchise reached the playoffs in IPL 2016.

Popular Indian players who played for the franchise were Suresh Raina, Dinesh Karthik, Amit Mishra, Ishan Kishan, Ravindra Jadeja, Irfan Pathan, Praveen Kumar, and Munaf Patel. Famous overseas players who were part of the team were Aaron Finch, Jason Roy, Brendon McCullum, James Faulkner, Dwayne Bravo, Dwayne Smith, Andrew Tye, and Dale Steyn.

Gujarat Lions was led by Suresh Raina in IPL 2016 and reached the playoffs in the season. They topped the points table after the group stage. The team lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore in Qualifier 1 match and then lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 2 match. As a result, they finished on the 3rd spot in the tournament.

The team played 16 matches in the tournament, winning 9 and losing 7. They managed to score 2450 runs in the season. Suresh Raina and Aaron Finch were the top two run-scorers of the team with 399 runs and 393 runs respectively. Raina batted in 15 innings while Finch played 12 innings.
