England captain Joe Root was upset that his team did not finish off the West Indies on the last day of the first test on Saturday, but he was hardly grumbling after a winter of disappointment.

After a 4-0 Ashes thrashing by Australia, England landed in the Caribbean under even intense scrutiny.

“I’m incredibly pleased of the team today, and the (whole) week,” Root said after England fell six wickets short of bowling out the West Indies in their second innings on the island of Antigua. “I believe the character we showed off the back of the previous trip to not panic and pull ourselves back in the game from that first hour when we found ourselves in a bad place (losing four quick wickets) On a forgiving wicket for our seamers, we improved steadily.”

Going into the rest of the series, there are a lot of promising indicators. England’s cause was hampered by Mark Wood’s absence in the second innings due to a right elbow injury, which Root said would be assessed before the second test, which begins on Wednesday in Barbados.

“When you’ve been engaged in a game like [the 2019 Headingly Ashes Test], you never feel out of it,” England skipper Root stated after the game. You never stop believing, especially when certain players are involved.

After Joe Root made a brave declaration in an attempt to win the game, the West Indies held on for a six-wicket draw in the opening Test against England. Nkrumah Bonner and Jason Holder successfully saw out the day.

On a calm Sir Vivian Richards Stadium field, West Indies and England drew the first Test on Saturday. West Indies finished the last day on 147-4, needing 286 runs from 71 overs, with first inning hundred makers Nkrumah Bonner undefeated on 38 and Jason Holder unbroken on 37. Wednesday marks the opening of the second Test of the three-match series in Bridgetown.
