Joe Root has endured a tough time as England Test captain in the last few months. He had a tough series against India in India and then against India in their own backyard as well. This followed an Ashes series loss at the start of the year and then the series loss against West Indies in West Indies.

West Indies dominated the third and final Test in Grenada bowling out England for 204 and 120 in the two innings. They won the Test match by 10 wickets to complete a 1-0 series win. Though Root is confident of continuing as England Test’s captain, former England cricketers are having their doubts. Moreover, England have won just once in the last 17 Test matches under Root and have not won a Test series in his last five attempts.

“I am very passionate about taking this team forward.I feel like the group are very much behind me. I know this is a results-based business but it does not feel like we are far away from turning results” were words from Root despite the series loss.

Former England captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain had their doubts over Root’s continuation as Test captain.

“As was obvious to anyone who was present in Australia, and should have been obvious to anyone who wasn’t, Root has reached the end of the road as captain,” Atherton wrote in The Times.

Hussain said that Root is a world-class batsman but lacking an “instinctive feel for the game as captain” following the decision to drop James Anderson and Stuart Broad from the Test series against West Indies.

“They want to be a likeable team but you need more than that to win Tests,” Hussain wrote in the Daily Mail.

Joe Root scored 1,708 Test runs in 2021 but has failed to replicate his form in 2022. He scored 322 runs in the five-match Ashes series while just 289 runs in the three-match series against West Indies.
