ICC Champions Trophy 2017

The ICC Champions Trophy is one of the two marquee ICC events in the ODI format. The tournament is organized by the International Cricket Council. At Cricketaddictor, our dedicated writers provide exclusive first-hand coverage of all the latest ICC Champions Trophy news.

In 1998, the ICC decided to launch the tournament with a view to raise funds for the development of the game in non-Test playing countries. The first edition of the Champions Trophy was played in Bangladesh in June 1998. Bangladesh was an associate member nation at that time. The second edition in 2000 was also hosted by an associate member nation - Kenya.

The ICC gave those countries the hosting rights to increase the popularity of cricket in those regions. However, since 2002, the hosting rights have been shared between countries under an unofficial rotation system. Since then, no associate member nation has hosted the Champions Trophy.

Eight editions of the Champions Trophy have been played so far. Talking about the ICC Champions Trophy team list, a total of 13 teams have participated in the competition over the years.

Australia and India are the most successful side in the competition. Both the teams have won the tournament twice so far while South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies, and Pakistan have won it once.

As far as ICC Champions Trophy stats and records are concerned, South Africa won the inaugural edition in 1998 with a win over West Indies in the final. In 2000, New Zealand defeated India before India and Sri Lanka shared the Champions Trophy in 2002. In 2004, West Indies beat England to win their first Champions Trophy.

Australia then won the following two editions in 2006 and 2009 before India won the Champions Trophy for the second time in 2013. In 2017, India qualified for the final once again but ended up losing the game against arch-rivals Pakistan.

In 2016, the ICC canceled the future editions of the Champions Trophy after the 2017 edition in order to have only one marquee event for each format. However, in 2021, the governing body of the game decided to bring back the competition in 2025.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will be played in Pakistan with eight teams participating in it. According to the current Champions Trophy format, the top eight ranked teams in the ODI World Cup (including the hosts of the Champions Trophy) secured a berth for the tournament.

The eight teams will be divided into two groups of four teams each. One team will play against the other three teams in the same group once. The top two teams from each group will then advance to the semifinal. To get all the updates on the ICC Champions Trophy points table, make sure to follow us.
