Former India women’s team captain Anjum Chopra believes picking four teams as the semifinalists even before the start of the ICC World Cup 2023 is tough as well as unfair.

The highly-anticipated ODI World Cup is scheduled to get underway on Thursday (October 5). Defending champions England will take on New Zealand in the tournament opener at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. A total of ten teams are participating in the thirteenth edition of the ODI World Cup.

Many experts as well as fans have opined that this year’s World Cup might be the most competitive one in the history of the competition. There are no clear-cut favorites to win the tournament as a number of teams are strong contenders to win the trophy. The likes of India, England, Australia, Pakistan, and New Zealand have been tipped as favorites by many while teams such as Sri Lanka and South Africa also have the ability to go all the way.

Anjum Chopra on World Cup semifinalists:

Ahead of the World Cup, experts have predicted the semifinalists for the competition. However, Anjum Chopra believes it is unfair to pick four teams even before the start of the tournament. Speaking to the Times of India, the former cricketer-turned-commentator began by saying that each team has an equal chance of lifting the trophy.

“That’s a tough one. That’s an unfair one. Even before the World Cup has begun, 10 teams are there and everyone’s got an equal chance of lifting the trophy,” Anjum Chopra said.

She then proceeded to pick five teams who are the frontrunners to make it to the semifinals, saying: If we really think through, what’s the sustainability, how the teams are matched, I guess looking at Australia, the way they are playing, looking at New Zealand, the way they are performing.

“You can never keep England out of the equation. You can never keep Pakistan out. We want India to win. So looking at all these, it’s difficult to pick four. So, I named 5. It’s unfair to say that these are my top four. Obviously, it’s not about the top four. I would want India to win the tournament, but one game at a time,” added Anjum Chopra.

Meanwhile, Anjum Chopra will be plying her trade as a commentator during the ODI World Cup.
