Australia have announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. The most successful side in the history of the ODI World Cup, the five-time world champions will be eyeing a record-extending sixth World Cup title in the upcoming tournament.
Australia have named an allrounder-heavy side for the marquee event in the India. Sean Abbott has earned his maiden call-up for a World Cup while Marnus Labuschagne was snubbed once again. The snub was very much on the cards for Labuschagne after he was dropped from the ODI side for the forthcoming five-match ODI series against South Africa.
The bold call from the Australian selectors made it clear that Labuschagne was not in the scheme of things for the World Cup. The selectors had named an 18-member squad for the South Africa series. From the squad picked for the series against the Proteas, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie and Tanveer Sangha have failed to make the cut for the World Cup.
Australia squad for ICC World Cup 2023:
Australia will rely heavily on allrounders in the World Cup. They have selected Mitchell Marsh, Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis as the seam bowling allrounders. Sean Abbott, Ashton Agar and captain Pat Cummins are also more than handy with the bat while Glenn Maxwell is another allrounder in the squad.
As of now, the likes of Maxwell, Cummins, Steve Smith and Mitchell Starc are nursing injuries and will miss the upcoming ODI series against South Africa. All the four players are expected to play in the three-match ODI series against India later this month before the World Cup gets underway.
“All are well placed to come back online in the coming weeks and potentially for selection in the upcoming series against India,” said selection chief George Bailey.
“There are eight one-day matches still to play in South Africa and India before the final squad is due to be declared. They are followed by two World Cup practice games, which offers plenty of opportunity to continue the build for the tournament,” he added.
Teams are allowed to make changes to their World Cup squad until the ICC-mandated deadline of September 28.
