When Australia announced their squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, Marnus Labuschagne was not included in the team given his lack of form in the ODI format. Recently, he was included in the squad, replacing injured spinner Ashton Agar.
Marnus Labuschagne has recently shown a great improvement in his ODI game, he was the highest run-getter in the recently concluded SA vs. AUS ODI series where he scored 283 runs in five matches with an average of 70.75.
Marnus Labuschagne’s ODI record improved a lot this year after his performance against South Africa and India. He has scored 464 runs in 10 innings with an average of 51.56 in 2023, including two half-centuries and a century in the process.
He played a brilliant knock scoring 72 runs against India in the third ODI of the IND Vs AUS ODI series. Marnus Labuschagne proved his worth to the selectors and is now a part of the Australian squad for the World Cup.
Recently, Marnus Labuschagne revealed the conversation he had with the selectors after Ashton Agar’s injury vacated a spot in the World Cup squad. He talked about how he needed to make some technical and mental tweaks in his game to prove to the selectors that he was good enough to play in the World Cup. He is a man of his word and showed the selectors, what he is capable of in ODI cricket.

“I couldn’t have predicted how it all unfolded and how it happened, but I was very confident. I did tell selectors when I wasn’t included. I really feel like I’m the guy for you to bat at No.4. I know I’m not there, I know I haven’t performed like I wanted to but I know I’m the person for the job at that spot’,” Marnus Labuschagne said about his conversation with the selectors before his inclusion in the World Cup squad.
Australia will kick off their World Cup campaign against the host nation India on 8th October in Chennai, and Marnus Labuschagne will play the anchor role for their middle order. He is in top form right now and he is the kind of batter who will not easily throw away his wicket. The bowlers should be prepared for this top player as he gears up to take on them in this tournament.
