Stuart Broad Believes Ben Stokes Will Show His Worth In Knockouts; Says England Made Right Call To Add Harry Brook In ICC World Cup 2023

Former England pacer Stuart Broad talked about Ben Stoke’s presence in the squad for the ICC World Cup 2023. He believes that the all-rounder will prove his worth in the knockout games and also feels that the team made the right decision to add Harry Brook to the team.

England will be one of the favourites going into the ICC World Cup 2023. The kind of squad they have surely makes them the hot contender to win the title. Ahead of the tournament, they also called back Ben Stokes, who took his retirement back and boarded the flight to India.

Stuart Broad was elated with Ben Stokes inclusion in the team and pointed out that the all-rounder’s ability to cope with pressure has been the main reason he has been picked. The former speedster also added that England’s Test skipper has learned from the lowest moment, which was the 2016 T20 World Cup.

Broad highlighted that after the incident Ben Stokes on his own has won two World Cups for England along with Ashes. Writing in his column for Daily Mail, he explained:

“From an England perspective, Stokes will show his true worth in the knockout games. Because when the World Cup comes to a head, you want him in the middle order. His ability to cope with pressure is one of the main reasons he has been picked. It isn’t a quality that’s inherent.”

“You learn it from experience and Stokes learned from his lowest moment, in the final of 2016’s Twenty20 World Cup. Since getting hit for four sixes by Carlos Brathwaite, look at how he’s coped with pressure scenarios. Since then, England have won a couple of World Cups, and some Ashes Tests because of him.”

Ben Stokes has played 108 ODIs and has scored 3159 runs an average of 40.5 with four tons and 22 half-centuries in 105 ODIs. Apart from this he also picked 74 wickets at an average of 42.39.

Ben Stokes notably was the Man of the Match in the final of the ICC World Cup 2019. He also played magnificent innings under pressure in the final of the T20 World 2023 that helped England win. He recently smashed the highest score for the team in ODIs when he scored 182 runs against New Zealand.

Harry Brook was a late inclusion in the England squad for the ICC World Cup 2023. Initially, he wasn’t there but later he replaced Jason Roy in the team. The presence of Brook makes England even stronger as he brings his versatility with him.

Stuart Broad highlighted Harry Brook’s ability and said that it was the right call to add him to the team. He also expressed his sympathy with Jason Roy and stated:

“Harry Brook can bat anywhere from one to six, while both of those two are top-three players and although Brook wasn’t in the initial squad they picked, he was on the plane in most people’s minds. It was the right call to get him in.”

“Unfortunately for Jason, a back spasm arrived which allowed the opportunity for Malan to carry on the fine form he’s always shown in an England shirt. Sport often is about timing and it shows more evidence of a strength in depth that preceding generations have not had pre-World Cup.”
