Former England pacer Stuart Broad feels that India is a huge favourite to win the ICC World Cup 2023. Stuart Broad also listed some reasons why India will be a difficult team to outplay in the ICC World Cup 2023.
ICC World Cup 2023 begins on October 5. India, the hosts, are one of the favourites to win the title. England is the defending champions of the tournament and they face a tough challenge against India to win the trophy for the consecutive time.
India Will Be Very Difficult To Stop: Stuart Broad
In his column for Daily Mail, former England pacer Stuart Broad talked about several reasons why India is the favourite to win the ICC World Cup 2023. Broad said that India will find it very difficult to stop at their home. He also added that since India is also the top-ranked ODI side currently, they will be a tough team to beat at the World Cup.
“If England manage to retain their World Cup title, it will be a phenomenal effort but my overriding feeling is that if India play their perfect tournament, they are going to be very difficult to stop.
Jos Buttler certainly has the team to challenge, one with the ability to post high totals, but I just think India, as hosts and the top-ranked ODI side, will be a hugely difficult proposition to get past”, Stuart Broad wrote.
Home Teams Tend To Prosper In 50 Over World Cup: Stuart Broad
Stuart Broad also highlighted that the home teams won the previous three editions of ODI World Cup. Hence, this makes the hosts India huge favourites to win ICC World Cup 2023.
“Recent history shows you that home teams tend to prosper in 50-over World Cups: it was in India in 2011, and India won; the final was in Australia in 2015, Australia won the trophy; England won in 2019. So, on that basis alone, India would have to be huge favourites,” the former right-arm pacer further added.
Stuart Broad also noted that pacer Jasprit Bumrah is back to the Indian team ahead of World Cup and it’s a big boost for the team for the tournament.
“Then take into account that they’re playing pretty decent cricket, and their key fast-bowler star Jasprit Bumrah is coming back to full fitness. Contrast to England. Without sounding like I am giving them excuses, they have got a pretty tough draw, to be honest”, Stuart Broad, who retired from all forms of cricket after Ashes 2023, further wrote.
Meanwhile, ICC World Cup 2023 will take a clash between 10 teams namely India, England, New Zealand, Australia, England, Netherlands, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan.
The tournament will witness a round-robin format where each team will face the other team once. ICC World Cup 2023 final takes place on November 19. England is the defending champions who won the title in the previous edition in 2019.
