Former India opener Virender Sehwag is hopeful of a good show from Virat Kohli in the upcoming ICC World Cup 2023. The former cricketer is also hopeful that his ex-teammate will score a century in the forthcoming edition after failing to reach the triple-digit mark in the previous edition.

Virat Kohli was India’s second-highest-run scorer in the 2019 World Cup. While he scored more than 400 runs with the help of five fifties, he could not score a century. The right-handed batsman, however, has been in good form in recent times and will be looking to have a good campaign with the bat in the World Cup.

In 2023, Virat Kohli scored five centuries across formats with the last one being a stunning century against Pakistan in the Asia Cup. With India to begin their World Cup campaign this week, Virender Sehwag is hopeful of a good display from Virat Kohli. Virender Sehwag is also hoping that the Men in Blue win the World Cup and give Virat Kohli a ride on their shoulders.

“Cheeku (Kohli) didn’t score a single century in the 2019 World Cup, this year I hope he scores many hundreds and ends up as the leading run-scorer in the tournament. Then, I want him to be carried on the shoulders and get a round of the ground,” Virender Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli deserve to win the World Cup: Virender Sehwag

Speaking further, Virender Sehwag said that India’s senior stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli deserve to win the World Cup. He highlighted Rohit’s disappointing snub from the 2011 World Cup-winning team and hailed his performance in ODIs.

“These two (Rohit & Kohli) senior players deserve to win the World Cup. Rohit Sharma was so close to getting picked for the 2011 World Cup but missed out. Later he became the Badshah of ODIs, he deserves to win a World Cup trophy because he is a fantastic player,” said Virender Sehwag.

Team India will launch their World Cup campaign against Australia in Chennai on Sunday, October 8.

India’s World Cup Squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Ishan Kishan (wk), Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami.
