Former India opener Gautam Gambhir became a target of Indian cricket fans on Twitter after the news of MS Dhoni being named the mentor of the Indian cricket team for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 broke out.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), on September 8, 2021, announced the 15-man Indian main squad and three reserve players for the T20 World Cup 2021 which begins in October in the UAE and will be played at the venues like Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Oman. The final of the tournament will be played on November 14.

MS Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, last played for India in the semifinal of the ICC 2019 World Cup in England against New Zealand and despite scoring a half-century, failed to help his team cross the finishing line.

The beef between Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni, especially between their fans on social media began after Gambhir had said that there were two people due to whom India won the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka in Mumbai.

As many of you recall, the most often shared highlight of that historic night is MS Dhoni hitting Nuwan Kulasekara for a six to make India ODI World Champions once again after 28 years as the fans and the Indian dressing room went crazy.

However, many of the cricket fans on social media and experts highlight that Gautam Gambhir, who came into bat early in the final as India lost Virender Sehwag for a duck and stitched two important partnerships, first with Virat Kohli and then with MS Dhoni, during his 97-run knock, is often forgotten and his contribution to the victory was big as MS Dhoni’s.

However, Gambhir has since made some remarks about Dhoni and his form during his playing days which have made the MS Dhoni fan club and the legion of the former India captain’s followers permanently against the 2007 T20 world Cup and 2011 World Cup final hero.
