Namibia pacer Ruben Trumpelmann produced one of the most memorable first overs in T20 World Cups history versus Scotland as he bagged not one, not two – but three wickets in the very first over of the match!
The two sides clashed on Wednesday in Abu Dhabi and Ruben Trumpelmann blew away the opposition’s top-order.
He started the fireworks on the first ball itself: left-handed opener George Munsey chopped on his stumps as he under-edged a cut shot. The second legal delivery, which was surrounded by two wides down the leg side, was defended back to Ruben Trumpelmann by Calum MacLeod.
MacLeod couldn’t keep away the third delivery though as he nicked a delivery angled away and outside off through to the wicket-keeper. There was more joy to come for Ruben Trumpelmann as he dismissed Richie Berrington, Scotland’s stand-in skipper, on the fourth ball.
Berrington missed an inswinging delivery which hit him on the pad; the umpire took his time before raising his finger. Berrington opted for the review only to find an umpire’s call on hitting and had to walk back to the dressing room as the 23-year-old Ruben Trumpelmann claimed his third wicket of the over. The fifth and the sixth ball were dots to complete a stunning over.
Scotland rattled in the powerplay by Namibia
After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Namibia got a dream start from Ruben Trumpelmann, who took three wickets in the first over. The left-arm pacer bowled George Munsey on the first ball of the match, had Calum MacLeod edging to the wicket-keeper on the third ball, before trapping Scotland’s stand-in captain Richie Berrington lbw out on the fourth.
David Wiese then dismissed Craig Wallace lbw in the sixth over as Namibia were left reeling at 22/4 by the end of the powerplay.
There was just one boundary scored in the next four overs as Matthew Cross and Michael Leask halted the fall of wickets taking Scotland to 43/4 at the mid-innings mark.
Leask then broke his shackles with a four and a six off Michael van Lingen before Jan Frylinck castled Cross at the other end. At the time of writing, Scotland are 58/5 at the 12-over mark.
