Shreyas Iyer faced a bit of hard luck in ICC T20 World Cup 2022 as he was not picked in the Indian squad for the tournament. He was selected as one of the stand-by players in the squad just like Asia Cup 2022. Iyer is a regular batsman in the team in the last few years but the narrow competition for the batsmen kept him away from the final 15.
Shreyas Iyer is one of the most experienced T20 players for the Indian team. He has played 46 T20Is and accounts for 1029 runs at an average of 33.19. He has also slammed 7 fifties in the shortest format and owns a strike rate of 136+. However, like the last year’s T20 World Cup, Iyer could not grab a place in the squad this year as well. Here we take a glance at 3 reasons why Shreyas Iyer was not selected in India squad for T20 World Cup 2022.

3 Reasons Why Shreyas Iyer Was Not Selected In India Squad For T20 World Cup 2022
1. Middle-Order Batter Profile
Shreyas Iyer is a middle-order batter. In the national team, there are many batsmen with the same profile. Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav don similar roles. Moreover, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who are among the most crucial part of the playing XI, also bat in the middle-order.
Deepak Hooda, who has recently impressed with his batting in the shortest format, is also a middle-order batter. Hence since the selectors had so many options for middle-order batters, Iyer was overlooked for the position over others.

2. No Bowling Skills
Shreyas Iyer is a powerful batter but he does not own any bowling skills. In his T20I career spanning 46 games, he has just bowled just 2 balls. Having the ability to bowl gives an advantage to any player. The team can utilize them as occasional bowlers.
Players like Deepak Hooda, Hardik Pandya, and Axar Patel have the ability to both bat and ball. Hence, it gives them an edge over Shreyas Iyer. That is one of the reasons why Iyer, who has far more experience than Axar Patel and Deepak Hooda, was overlooked in the squad for ICC T20 World Cup 2022 squad.
3. Less Overseas Experience
If we take a look at Shreyas Iyer’s T20I career, he has less overseas experience. Out of his 46 T20I games, he has played 34 matches at home. T20 World Cup 2022 is scheduled to be played in Australia and Iyer has only played 2 games in the nation, in which he got out for a duck in one game and scored an unbeaten 12 in the other.
Hence, Iyer lacks experience on overseas soil, especially in Australia. This might be one of the reasons why selectors opted to evict him from the squad for T20 World Cup 2022.
