Danish Kaneria, a former spinner, believed that Babar Azam should quit being “stubborn” and consider Pakistan cricket’s best interests by giving up his opening position.

Despite the Men in Green losing to England by five wickets in the T20 World Cup 2022 final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the 28-year-old Babar had a miserable tournament.

After starting the competition with two defeats, the Pakistan cricket team was all but out of the 2022 T20 World Cup until a number of results fell in their favor and they resurrected their form to proceed to the last-four stage.

The Babar Azam-led team then overcame New Zealand in the semi-finals before losing to England in the final. In the final, Pakistan batted first and scored 137/8 before England’s bowlers put up a fight. England eventually prevailed by five wickets and took home the T20 World Cup trophy.

“Babar Azam has been stubborn about not giving up his opening spot. The same happened when he was with Karachi Kings too. He is adamant about this because he cannot bat in the middle order. His stubbornness is only doing harm to Pakistani cricket because of the slow starts,” Danish Kaneria was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.

“There is no one like Virat Kohli”: Danish Kaneria

Danish Kaneria also praised former Indian captain Virat Kohli for his selflessness. Despite doubts about Kohli’s abilities, the veteran stated that he did not give up.

“There is no one like Virat Kohli when it comes to selflessness.” Under his leadership, the side lost the World Cup, and he was made the victim. Many people questioned his position on the team. But he refused to quit. “He gave the new captain his entire backing and played at the number he requested,” Danish Kaneria continued.

In six games of the T20 World Cup 2022, Kohli amassed 296 runs with a strike rate of 136.40, an average of 98.66, and four half-centuries. His highest score at the MCG against Pakistan was 82 not out.
