Jos Buttler refused to attribute England’s shocking loss to Ireland to the Melbourne rains, acknowledging that “the better team triumphed” here.

After giving their opponents the chance to bat at the MCG, England was careless with the ball, but they managed to pull things back as the boys in green fell from 103 for one to 157 all out.

Ireland won another dramatic T20 game against Jos Buttler’s lackluster squad at the Melbourne Cricket Ground by five runs to clinch another memorable World Cup victory over England.

Eleven years after their three-wicket triumph over England at the 50-over World Cup in India, Ireland overcame England in the T20 World Cup after rain halted their opponents’ lethargic run chase.

After 14.3 overs, England was chasing 158 and was 105-5, five runs short of the DLS par score of 110, when the rain that had delayed the start of the game earlier resurfaced and did not cease in time for the game to begin.

The delay proved fatal, as England, who were on 105 for five when the rain began, slipped to a five-run defeat under the DLS method, cutting short their chances of reaching the semi-finals.

With the constant threat of rain, England’s response never found its footing. Buttler, Alex Hales, and Ben Stokes all fell cheaply, and none of them reached the DLS par score.

They were still trailing when the weather changed, giving the Irish a memorable five-run victory.

Buttler told Sky Sports that he didn’t mind the early finish because it was only going to get heavier.

“They bowled well and used the wicket well. It (the rain) was going to get heavier and heavier wasn’t it, but again as I said we won the toss and chose to bowl with the advantage of knowing what to do with the bat. They outplayed us in all three facets of the game and the better team won.”

On October 28, England and Australia will face off in a T20 World Cup match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
