The Melbourne Cricket Ground is all set to host the ENG vs PAK T20 World Cup 2022 final on Sunday, November 13. Pakistan won against New Zealand and England beat India on their way to making the final. Cricket fans are nostalgic about this final which in many ways is a rematch of the 1992 World Cup final between England and Pakistan which was also played at the MCG.
England and Pakistan have played 28 T20I against each other with England winning 18 and Pakistan nine. Both teams recently played a bilateral series in Pakistan which England won 4-3. These two teams have played a lot in the last two years in the T20I format.
Pakistan have proved many wrong on its way to making the final. They began their campaign with back-to-back losses against India and Zimbabwe. South Africa’s loss to the Netherlands meant that Pakistan had to win their match against Bangladesh to make the semis and they did it with some authority. In the semi-final against the Kiwis, they brought out their A-game.
Mohammad Rizwan and Babar Azam scored the fifties and laid the platform for a perfect run chase with 153 being the target. As it turned out, Pakistan won the game by 7 wickets.
England had their moments in this World Cup as well. They began with a win against Afghanistan and lost their next match against Ireland. Their match against Australia was rained out. Back-to-back wins against Sri Lanka and New Zealand meant that they made the semis and were ready to take on India.
India scored 168/6 in their 20 overs. Batting became easy under lights in Adelaide and Buttler (80*) and Alex Hales (86*) notched up a 170-run stand to take their team over the line and to the final. None of the Indian bowlers were able to make an impact as England registered a 10-wicket win to knock India out of the tournament.
There is a lot of anticipation regarding the final and rain is expected to play spoilsport. Three matches at the MCG have been already washed out due to rain and the final is also under rain threat.
The ICC has made changes to its original rules to ensure that the final is played in the right spirit. An extra addition of four hours has been made to the standard timings on the reserve day in case rain affects the game during its normal time on Sunday, November 13. However, there is a rain threat expected on November 13 and 14.
