The 37-year-old India National Cricket Team wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has opined that the premier leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal would have “made a lot more damage” had he been part of India’s playing XI at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

The 32-year-old Chahal was part of India’s World Cup squad, but he didn’t feature in the playing XI throughout the tournament, with India giving preference to Ravichandran Ashwin as the first-choice spinner.

Speaking on Cricbuzz, Karthik talked about Chahal’s absence from India’s playing XI at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

The veteran wicketkeeper-batter, who was also part of India’s World Cup squad, said that the off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin started off very well in the competition, but didn’t end well. He added that Chahal could have been an “interesting choice”.

“These are all calls that are taken by the captain and coach with the belief they had in a certain player. To be fair, Ashwin started the tournament well but probably didn’t end well. But Chahal would’ve definitely made a lot more damage, it could’ve been an interesting choice. But hindsight is a very interesting thing to look at once the results come out,” said Karthik on Cricbuzz.

Karthik further said that the expectations from Team India were very high in the multi-nation tournaments, but they failed to deliver.

“All in all, if we look at the overall picture of the World Cup and Asia Cup, we expect a lot of better from Team India and that’s the right way to put it,” he said.

Notably, India failed to qualify for the final of the Asia Cup 2022 after facing defeats against Sri Lanka and Pakistan in the Super 4 stage of the tournament. Also, India faced a humiliating 10-wicket defeat against England in the semi-final to get knocked out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

Meanwhile, India will begin their 2023 with a white-ball series against Sri Lanka at home. The Sri Lanka tour of India 2023 consists of three ODIs and three T20Is. The T20Is will be played on January 3, 5, and 7 in Mumbai, Pune, and Rajkot respectively. The ODIs will be played on January 10, 12, and 15 in Guwahati, Kolkata, and Trivandrum respectively.
