ICC T20 World Cup 2022: Afghanistan Announce 15-member Squad For The Marquee Tournament

On Thursday, September 15, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced a 15-member squad of the Afghanistan National Cricket Team for the forthcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, which is set to be held in Australia.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, which is the eighth edition of the multi-nation tournament, is scheduled to commence on October 16 with the group stage games. The Super 12 round will commence on October 22 and the final is set to take place on November 13 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Afghanistan are placed in Group 1 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 along with defending champions Australia, New Zealand and England. Also, the winners of Group A and the runners-up of Group B will join Group 1.

Meanwhile, there have been a few changes in the Afghanistan squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. Of the 17 players who were part of the Asia Cup 2022 squad, Samiullah Shinwari, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afsar Zazai, Karim Janat and Noor Ahmad have not been included in the World Cup squad whereas Darwish Rasooli, Qais Ahmad and Salim Safi have been named in the squad.

ACB chief selector Noor Malikzai, while talking about the squad, said that they have picked the best available players in the country and was hopeful of the team doing well in the multi-nation tournament in Australia. In an official statement released by ACB, Noor said:

“The Asia Cup was a very good opportunity for the team to buildup things nicely for the much-important global event in Australia. Fortunately, Darwish Rasooli has recovered from injury (broken finger) and we are happy to have him available for the WT20, he has demonstrated good glimpses of him in the previously held Shpageeza Cricket League 2022 and offers an additional batting option to our middle order. 

“Since the Australian conditions offer further support for the fast bowlers, so we have added Salim Safi, the tall right-arm quick to add further impetus to our bowling department. Overall we have picked our best available players for the event and we are hopeful of them to do well and better represent the country in the mega event.”

Mohammad Nabi (C), Najibullah Zadran (VC), Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK), Azmatullah Omarzai, Darwish Rasooli, Farid Ahmad Malik, Fazal Haq Farooqi, Hazratullah Zazai, Ibrahim Zadran, Mujib ur Rahman, Naveen ul Haq, Qais Ahmad, Rashid Khan, Salim Safi and Usman Ghani. Reserves: Afsar Zazai, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Rahmat Shah, Gulbadin Naib.
