On Tuesday, September 6, Cricket South Africa (CSA) announced a 15-member squad for the forthcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022, which is set to be held in Australia in October-November. The Proteas have been placed in Group B alongside India, Pakistan and Bangladesh in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022.

South Africa National Cricket Team had an amazing campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 in UAE. They were placed in the group of death alongside England, Australia, West Indies and Sri Lanka. The Temba Bavuma-led side won 4 out of 5 games in the group stage but were unable to make it to the semi-finals due to a poor net run rate.

Meanwhile, the limited-overs skipper Temba Bavuma has been included in the T20 World Cup team after recovering from a left elbow injury, which he suffered in the T20I series against Team India in June.

Also, young Proteas sensation Tristan Stubbs has got his maiden World Cup call-up after a stellar performance with the bat in the recently concluded series against England National Cricket Team.

However, there is no Rassie van der Dussen in the Proteas squad for the marquee tournament. Notably, the star batter has been ruled out of the tournament due to a fracture of his left index finger, which he sustained during the second Test against England in Manchester. The 33-year-old will undergo surgery and will be out of action for at least six weeks.

CSA Convenor of Selectors Victor Mpitsang said that the process of squad selection was pretty tough for the selectors due to the availability of several talented players in the country.

“This has been a really tough squad to select, simply because we had so many players in excellent form over the past few months and performing at a level that made the selectors sit up and notice them.

“Someone like Tristan Stubbs who was not in the frame a year ago has done incredibly well to force his way into the mix based on his performances and his selection should be an inspiration for every young player out there. We are also delighted to welcome back our captain Temba Bavuma from injury and we have no doubt his return will further galvanise the team.

“This group of players showed off their brilliant skill and talent when they overcame England in England recently. These sort of performances only bode well for us heading to the World Cup. Overall we are delighted with mix of players that have been chosen and look forward to watching them represent the country in Australia,” Victor Mpitsang said.
