ICC T20 World Cup hosts Australia are set to tour India as a preparatory campaign ahead of the marquee event, scheduled to be held in October and November. The defending champions, who announced their squad have made just one change in their squad, bringing in Tim David in place of spinner Mitchell Swepson.
David, who has not represented Australia till now is a highly sought-after commodity in the shortest format of the game. The globe-trotter has consistently done well in franchise leagues across the world and has made a name for himself as one of the best finishers.
Maxwell draws a comparison of Tim David’s sheer strength with Marcus Stoinis and Mitch Marsh
Speaking about David, another big hitter from the Australian team, Glenn Maxwell, said that David’s abilities were rare.
“One of the rare things he has which there isn’t a whole lot of in Australia is just raw power. He’s able to muscle the ball, much in the same way Stoinis and Mitch Marsh do it.
“He’s probably developed his game a little bit over the last two years where he’s got a bit more off-side [shots] so he’s not a one-dimensional hitter, he’s able to clear the boundary in different areas,” Maxwell told ESPNcricinfo in an interview.
Tim David likely to make his debut for Australia on the India tour
The 26-year-old Singaporean-Australian was one of the biggest buys in the late phases of the IPL auction and managed to live up to his lofty repute. After getting dropped in the mid-season from the playing line-up, David returned to play some stellar innings, scoring 186 runs at a staggering strike rate of 216.
“He does it against spin and quicks which is something that’s really impressive and something that impressed me during the IPL as well watching him go about his business,” Maxwell concluded.
Australia is expected to debut David ahead of the World Cup and give him time to settle into the scheme of things. The team still has to figure out their batting line-up, something that they are expected to do in the run-up to the tournament.
