The left-arm seamer Dilshan Madushanka, who suffered a quadriceps tear on the eve of Sri Lanka’s opening match in the T20 World Cup, has probably been ruled out of the competition.

In today’s qualifying round match at Kardinia Park in Geelong against Namibia, Madushanka, who was expected to share the new ball with speedster Dushmantha Chameera, left the practice session just four balls into his second over on Saturday morning with a hip injury.

The injury was confirmed by an MRI after Madushanka was observed hobbling away from practice on Saturday. He won’t likely be able to recover in time to participate in the World Cup and will most likely be replaced.

Madushanka, who recently made his international debut in the Asia Cup, stood out throughout the competition, taking six wickets and keeping an economy rate of 7.75 throughout six games.

He may have replaced Dushmantha Chameera as Sri Lanka’s second-choice quick because he added lively pace and swing to the powerplay overs as well as variety at the death. He was most likely to start against Namibia on Sunday in the first round.

Dilshan Madushanka was one of Sri Lanka’s finds of the Asia Cup:

Dilshan Madushanka, a very inexperienced pace-bowling attack leader, was one of Sri Lanka’s breakthroughs in the Aina Cup.

The Sri Lankan management has not yet announced a replacement, but given that Binura Fernando is on the standby list, despite being back home, he would be the most likely choice to take Dilshan Madushanka’s place.
Lahiru Kumara and Pramod Madushan, two other seamers on the Sri Lankan team, can take Madushanka’s place in the starting XI. Binura Fernando, who is also a left-arm quick, could take his place on the team.

Sri Lanka must play in the World Cup’s opening round despite recently winning the Asia Cup, where they will face Namibia, the United Arab Emirates, and the Netherlands.
