Mohammed Siraj, a fast bowler for India, has landed in Brisbane to join the team ahead of the T20 World Cup after being added to the roster of standby players after Jasprit Bumrah was ruled out.
Siraj has been called up to the team as a standby player, and Mohammad Shami, who was originally named as a travelling reserve, has been promoted to the main squad as a replacement for Bumrah.
Deepak Chahar had to be benched earlier because of back stiffness from the third and final T20I against South Africa. Shardul Thakur was added to the list of available players after Chahar was declared injured. Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Bishnoi, who recently participated in India’s 2-1 ODI series win over South Africa, are the other two standby players for the T20 World Cup.
Before it was revealed that Shami had been chosen as the team’s fifteenth player, there were rumours that Siraj might fill the spot after his strong performances against South Africa. Siraj also replaced Bumrah in the Indian T20I squad for the three-match South African series last month.
Mohammed Siraj landed in Brisbane on Sunday morning:
The pace spearhead was a top choice to take the place of injured Bumrah after putting on strong performances against South Africa in the most recent T20I series. However, the management chose Shami because of his extensive experience in pivotal games and added in-form Siraj to the standby squad.
Siraj and teammate Shardul Thakur will join the reserve squad after Siraj arrived in Brisbane on Sunday morning. After winning two straight short-format series against South Africa and Australia, Rohit Sharma and company are currently enjoying themselves.
The Men in Blue will now begin their campaign on Sunday, October 23, against their bitter rivals Pakistan, who just defeated Bangladesh and New Zealand in a tri-series. However, before moving on to the regular group stage matches, the team will also play the warm-up matches, beginning with Australia, to get accustomed to the Australian playing conditions.
