At the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Ireland defeated Jos Buttler‘s uninspired team by five runs in another thrilling T20 match to secure another illustrious World Cup triumph against England.
Ireland defeated England in the T20 edition of the World Cup as rain stopped their opponents’ sluggish run chase, eleven years after their three-wicket victory over England at the 50-over World Cup in India.
When the rain that had caused delays earlier in the game reappeared and did not stop in time for the game to start, England was chasing 158 and were 105-5 after 14.3 overs, five runs under the DLS par score of 110.
Weather Favors Ireland As They Beat England
After England laboriously reached 29-3 in the powerplay and then 67-4, Moeen Ali (24 no off 12) got going with three fours and a six, but the weather ultimately decided as Ireland scored a memorable victory.
Earlier, Ireland’s innings was aided by an 82-run partnership between Andy Balbirnie and Lorcan Tucker.
Ireland was all out for 157 at the MCG in cloudy conditions, thanks to the excellent batting of Balbirnie (62 off 47) and Tucker (34 off 27).
The pair easily hit the boundary and briefly had Ireland on track for a total of almost 200 until England’s plethora of top-notch bowlers successfully fought back late to limit the score.
While all-rounders Liam Livingstone (3/17) and Sam Curran (2/30) bowled well throughout, speedster Mark Wood (3/34) was pricey early as he frequently exceeded 150 km/h.
While Ireland made one change to their lineup from the team that suffered a humiliating nine-wicket loss to Sri Lanka on Sunday, England chose the same XI that defeated Afghanistan by five wickets on Saturday.
In his debut game in the competition, pitcher Fionn Hand replaces veteran spinner Simi Singh.
