ICC T20 World Cup 2022 Points Table Group A After Namibia vs UAE; Netherlands Become The 2nd Team To Qualify For Super 12

The ICC T20 World Cup 2022 points table of Group A saw a huge change after the United Arab Emirates defeated Namibia in the second match of the qualifying round on October 22 in Geelong. Thanks to this loss, Namibia was eliminated from the race of qualifying for Super 12s.

Earlier, Sri Lanka had made it into the Super 12s thanks to a convincing win over the Netherlands in Geelong itself. Dasun Shanaka had won the toss and chose to bat first. Thanks to Kusal Mendis’ 79 with 5 fours and 5 sixes to his name and Charith Asalanka made 31 runs as the Islanders posted 162/6 in 20 overs.

Paul van Meerkeren and Bas de Leede picked two wickets each for the Dutch side.

In reply, only Max O’Dowd managed to post some resistance to quality Sri Lankan bowling. He remained unbeaten on 71 with 6 fours and 3 sixes, but after him, only captain Scott Edwards managed to go past the 20-run mark, making 21 runs. The Netherlands finished on 146/9 in 20 overs and lost the match by 16 runs.

With this win, Sri Lanka qualified for the Super 12s, and thanks to them topping the points table, they entered Group 1 consisting of Australia, England, New Zealand, and Afghanistan.

The Netherlands was not out of the race for Super 12s qualification, but their fate rested on the result of the second match of the day.

In the second match of the qualifying round today at Geelong on October 20, 2022, UAE defeated Namibia by 7 runs. Namibia had to win this match in order to stay alive in the tournament and knock out the Netherlands, who had lost to Sri Lanka earlier in the day.

UAE batted first after winning the toss and posited 148/3 in 20 overs. Muhammad Waseem made 50 and captain C Rizwan made 43*, while Basil Hameed contributed 25*.

In reply, the Namibia team couldn’t get to a good start with Zahoor Khan and Basil Hameed taking 2 wickets each. David Wiese saved some grace with 55 and Ruben Trumpelmann scored 25 runs, as Namibia inched closer to victory. But in the end, they fell 7 runs short, finishing on 141/8.

With this loss, Namibia and UAE were eliminated from T20 World Cup, while Sri Lanka and the Netherlands went through to the main Super 12s round.
