Ravi Shastri thinks that Suryakumar Yadav, who has been in sensational form in Twenty20 internationals, where he has 1,045 runs in 34 games at an astounding strike rate of 176.81, could play a surprising position in Test cricket.
Yadav scored 73 runs on his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai in 2010, and went on to score 754 runs in nine games the following season, the most of any player on his team. This included a double-century against Orissa in his third match of the season, followed by a century in the next. He finished the season with another century in the Duleep Trophy.
Yadav’s first international appearance came eleven years after his first-class debut in 2021, and he promptly hit the opening ball he faced in a T20I, bowled by Jofra Archer, for six. In his first three T20Is, he scored two fifty-scores, and the year after that, he scored 117 off 55 in a match where India lost to England by a huge 215 runs.
Suryakumar Yadav, a dashing batsman who has been in sensational form in T20Is, would soon make his Test cricket debut if Shastri got his way.
“He deserves a chance to play Test cricket, too. He would be a top contender for me if I were the team’s captain. simply to steal the game and surprise the opposition in the middle order (from them). There is no rule prohibiting him from participating in the game’s largest format, “Says Shastri.
Suryakumar Yadav has the potential to light up the T20 World Cup: Ravi Shastri
Explaining what makes “Sky,” who is presently the No. 2 batsman in T20Is, so special, Shastri said,
“It’s a mix of everything, but what I like about his game is his reading of the game and the bowler’s mind.” He’s tinkering with the bowler’s mind, the bowler’s field. He has the audacity to try to hit the ball against which the field is positioned, which means you must get into position quickly.”
So, I believe his anticipation, or reading of what a bowler does, plays a significant role in his batting, and he’s been excellent at it. You’ll see some of the shots he takes. I haven’t seen many players attempt those shots.”
“AB de Villiers probably did this for a while in his prime. You don’t hit a ball from the middle and leg to the back sightscreen! In our time, it was an unheard-of shot. But he does it so effortlessly and consistently that you have to admire him. He has the potential to light up the T20 World Cup.”
At the Melbourne Cricket Ground on October 23, India will play Pakistan in their opening T20 World Cup match.
