ICC T20 World Cup 2022: Sri Lanka Include Niroshan Dickwella, Asitha Fernando And Matheesa Pathirana In WC Squad As Backups

On Wednesday, October 26, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced that the trio of fast bowlers Asitha Fernando and Matheesha Pathirana and wicketkeeper-batter Niroshan Dickwella are set to be included in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 squad of the Dasun Shanaka-led side as standbys.

SLC has made the decision to send three additional players to Australia for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 following a series of injuries to their players.

The Dasun Shanaka-led side have suffered numerous injury blows in the lead-up to and during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. Binura Fernando, who was named as a replacement for injured Dilshan Madushanka, has suffered a hamstring injury.

Dushmantha Chameera has been ruled out of the tournament after suffering a grade-two tear in the calf of his left foot and Dilshan Madushanka suffered a quad injury before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. Also, Pramod Madushan has not participated in the ongoing tournament since sustaining an injury in the game against UAE.

Talking about the batting side of things, Danushka Gunathilaka has suffered a hamstring injury and Ashen Bandara has been named as his replacement.

On Wednesday, October 26, SLC took to Twitter to announce that they have sent three additional players to Australia as backups. Also, Tim McCaskill, head of Sri Lanka Cricket’s high-performance centre, has travelled to Australia.

“SLC has decided to send 3 additional players to Australia to remain as backups in the event of any replacements,” Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) stated.

“Niroshan Dickwella, Asitha Fernando, & Matheesa Pathirana will be sent along with Tim McCaskill, Head of the High Performance Center of the SLC,” SLC further wrote.
