Sri Lanka today beat the Netherlands by 16 runs to qualify for the Super 12 round of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Sri Lanka will now have to wait for the result of the next game between Namibia and the UAE to ascertain whether they will play in Super 12 Group 1 or 2.
Regardless of which group Sri Lanka qualify, Sri Lanka will play their first game in Hobart on either the 23rd or 24th of October.
SL vs NED Match Highlights
A 44-ball 79-run knock from Kusal Mendis took Sri Lanka to 162 for 6 after a steady start. Sri Lanka scored 102 runs in the last 10 overs mainly due to towering sixes by Kusal Mendis.
Chasing a target of 163, the Netherlands lost wickets in regular intervals and only managed to score 149 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Qualification scenario of ICC T20 World Cup 2022
Following the Islander’s win, the Netherlands dropped to the second spot in Group A. With two teams set to qualify, the Dutch team’s fate will depend on the result of the UAE vs Namibia fixture. Namibia currently has two points and a superior run rate and a win will ensure they go through instead of the Netherlands.
Group B on the other hand is very evenly poised with all 4 teams-Scotland, Zimbabwe, West Indies & Ireland having 2 points from two matches, keeping the contest wide open for any team to qualify.
