Australia National Cricket Team captain Aaron Finch has said that his side will have to be “ultra-positive and ultra-aggressive” in their approach after the humiliating 89-run defeat against New Zealand in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 tournament opener.
The Super 12 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 commenced with the high-profile battle between defending champions Australia National Cricket Team and last year’s runners-up New Zealand National Cricket Team at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, October 22.

Batting first New Zealand posted 200/3 on the board and while defending the target they managed to bundle out Australia for 111. The loss to New Zealand on Saturday was Australia’s first loss against the Black Caps in Australia in white-ball cricket since February 2009. Also, the score of 111 was their lowest total in a T20I match at home.
Speaking after the match, Aaron Finch said that there is no point in thinking a lot about the defeat against the Kiwis and they need to focus on the upcoming matches in the multi-nation tournament.
“The fact that we’ve lost one game, yes, it’s a heavy loss and it hurts our chances, no doubt. We can’t dwell on that, we can’t change it,” said Finch.
“All we can do is concentrate on the next game and prepare really well for that against Sri Lanka (on Tuesday) and see how we go.
“We’ve taken the fate out of our own hands, I think to a point. We need to be ultra-positive, ultra-aggressive, and I’m sure that we’ll all do that.”
We’ve got the right players to win the World Cup – Aaron Finch
Even after the heavy defeat against the Black Caps, Australia captain Aaron Finch feels that they have got the right team structure and the right players to win back-to-back ICC Men’s T20 World Cups. He elaborated:
“We still feel as though we’ve got the right structure of team and we’ve got the right players to win the World Cup.
“Obviously it’s taken a big hit with the net run rate. When that happens, you need to play well. We need to get better quickly. Like I said, you need a bit of luck in T20 cricket as well as in such a brutal tournament. I think we’ve still got the right structure of the team, there’s no doubt about that.”
