Zimbabwe captain Craig Ervine was dejected after losing to India in their final group 2 match of the T20 World Cup 2022 by 71 runs but lauded his team for the spirit they showed in the match which was played at the MCG on November 6, 2022.
Zimbabwe was set a target of 187 runs to win, but only Ryan Burl (35) and Sikandar Raza (34) were able to withstand the Indian bowling attack who reduced them to 35/6 in 8 overs. In the end, Zimbabwe was bowled out for 115 in 17.2 overs as India won by 71 runs. For India, R Ashwin picked 3/22, while Hardik Pandya and Mohammad Shami took two wickets each.
Craig Ervine said in the post-match presentation: “We could have changed a couple of plans, Surya did extremely well in the back end and countered Richie’s (Ngarava) wide yorkers. We could have taken pace off the ball there. Credit to him, he came out and changed the game. Leading into the tournament, we had some positiveness upfront with the bat. Last couple of games, we went away from that fearless cricket and we went into our shells a little bit.
If you just stand there and let it swing, there’s a good chance that you’re gonna nick off or get bowled. You need to be more proactive. Our last few results didn’t go as planned. We did good work to get into the Super 12s. We’ll be building on that. We fielded really well, especially catching. The boys fought really hard throughout the World Cup.”
Suryakumar Yadav Blows Away Zimbabwe As India Set To Meet England In Semi-final
Earlier, Rohit Sharma won the toss and chose to bat first. Rishabh Pant came in for Dinesh Karthik. KL Rahul struck a brilliant 51 in 35 balls as India made 79 runs in the first 10 overs for the wicket of Rohit (15).
Then Zimbabwe took some wickets in middle overs as Virat Kohli (26), Rishabh Pant (3) and Hardik Pandya (18) got out for not much. But then Suryakumar Yadav unleashed hell as he struck 61* in 25 balls with 6 fours and 4 sixes, helping India to 186/5 in 20 overs.
India will now face England in the second semi-final on November 10 in Adelaide.
