Legendary India National Cricket Team spinner Anil Kumble and former Australia National Cricket Team all-rounder Tom Moody have opened up on whether the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 was the last of senior batters – Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli – in T20Is.

India faced a heartbreaking 10-wicket defeat against England in the semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 in Adelaide to get knocked out of the tournament and the ICC trophy drought of the Men In Blue continued.

After India’s World Cup campaign ended, many cricket pundits suggested that several senior players could retire from the shortest international format of the game.

During a discussion on ESPNcricinfo’s T20 Time Out, Anil Kumble was asked if we have likely seen the last of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in T20I cricket. Kumble responded:

“I think you’ll sort of not decide now, but then I am sure it’s a decision of players, No.1. No.2 it’s about what kind of or what brand of cricket that you want to play and then what is the by end of everyone else and that will determine who is the part of 2024 [T20 World Cup] and who is not.”

The next ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which will be the 9th edition of the tournament, will be held in 2024 in the West Indies and the United States.

With two years to play out, I would be very surprised if they play a lot of T20I cricket – Tom Moody on Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli

During the same discussion, Tom Moody said that he would be surprised if Rohit and Kohli continue to play a lot of T20I cricket for the Indian team. He elaborated:

“With two years to play out, I would be very surprised if they play a lot of T20 cricket for India between now and that World Cup. I think that decision will be something that they will need to sit down with the cricket board and work out six months prior to that World Cup. I don’t see any point in them playing any T20 cricket for India apart from franchise cricket, of course, to that point because it’s a great platform to look to develop the players.”
