In their opening T20 World Cup match, India defeated Pakistan by 4 wickets thanks to Ravichandran Ashwin’s mental fortitude. Ashwin’s awareness earned high accolades from India’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey.

When India required two runs off two balls, Ashwin entered the batting order. The senior India player missed the ball as it was travelling down the leg side and left it, causing the umpire to call wide.

Mohammed Nawaz’s bowling was subsequently used by Ashwin to clear the infield for a single, setting a wild celebration in the Indian dugout.

When asked what talk the management had before sending Ashwin, India’s bowling coach Paras Mhambrey responded, “It is the other way around.”

“In regards to Ashwin, he is the one who informs us, “This is what I’m going to do.” He just is, that’s all. He displayed poise and foresight by actually leaving that ball. Any other person at that point would simply hit their bat, but that is Ashwin for you, “Mhambrey said in the press conference.

Ravichandran Ashwin received praise from Virat Kohli:

In the last over drama on October 23 at the MCG, Virat Kohli, who produced an inspiring performance of 82 not out off 53 balls, praised Ashwin for his bravery in a challenging scenario.

“When you need 15-16 runs per over and the equation comes down to 2 runs off 2 balls, it’s easy to become relaxed or overly excited that you’re almost there. Then Dinesh Karthik emerged, “Kohli stated to Star Sports.

“I told Ashwin to hit over the covers. But uss time pe Ash ne dimaag ke uppar extra dimaag lagya (Ashwin used his brain at that point of time). That was a very brave thing to do. He came inside the line and the ball turned out to be wide. The situation was that if the ball goes into the gap, we will end up winning and that is what happened.”

When India plays the Netherlands in their second encounter on October 27 in Sydney, they will try to build on their victory.
