Fast bowler Shaheen Afridi of Pakistan claimed that although his team played well in its opening two T20 World Cup matches against Netherlands and India, the results were out of its control.

India defeated Pakistan by four wickets in a thrilling last over, and Pakistan then lost to Zimbabwe by one run. Pakistan’s campaign has been hampered by the losses since they are currently in trouble.

Although Pakistan defeated the Netherlands in their third match, they must win their next two games to remain in the competition. The outcome of the other teams in Group 2 will determine whether or not Pakistan can advance to the semifinals, so their future is no longer in their own hands.

Afridi stated this ahead of Pakistan’s match against South Africa on November 3: “In this World Cup, no team has it easy. We are glad to be on board (after defeating the Netherlands). Even though we did a good job in the last two games, you have no control over the outcome. In the remaining games, we’ll attempt to give everything we’ve got.”

“I am trying to give my 100 percent”: Shaheen Afridi

Afridi has yet to fully establish match fitness after returning from a right knee ligament injury. In matches against India and Zimbabwe, the Pakistani fast bowler failed to pick up a wicket and was also one of the more expensive bowlers. With his powerful lengths and one wicket against the Netherlands, the 22-year-old showed signs of regaining his full condition.

Talking about his comeback after staying on the sidelines for three months, Afridi said: “It is not easy to come back from such an injury after three months. May god never put anyone through this injury, but those who pick up this injury obviously know how difficult it is.”

“I’m trying to give it my all. My pace was probably similar earlier as well. The average speed was around 135-140 km/h; I’m working hard to regain full fitness. Match fitness varies. It is difficult to put forth 100% effort (immediately) when you return after three months.”

Pakistan will next play against South Africa on November 3 in Sydney.
