The BCCI National Team Selection Committee on Monday (September 12) announced a 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 and 4 standby players for the tournament.

Rishabh Pant failed with the bat whenever he got a chance in the Asia Cup. Apart from his batting, there was also criticism for his wicket-keeping in the Super Four match against Pakistan. He scored only 51 runs in three innings in the Asia Cup and his strike rate was less than 125.

Former cricketer Danish Kaneria recently questioned the Indian selection committee on the inclusion of Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik in the T20 World Cup to be held in 2022.

On his YouTube channel, Kaneria stated that Pant should have been left out due to his poor form with the bat in the T20s. He said how Karthik will have to be benched to make room for the left-hander in the playing XI.

“India are repeating the same mistakes. Pant has been selected because he has an impressive record in Australia. However, his recent form hasn’t been that great in T20 cricket.”

Kaneria mentioned that one extra bowler should have picked instead of two wicket keeper batsmen in the team. He added to that, the Indian team made similar mistakes in the selection of management in the past too.

“They also have Dinesh Karthik in the squad. But there’s no point in having him if he might not get a chance to play. They could have added an extra bowler instead.”

Kaneria said Indians should have gone with Bishnoi instead Ravichandran Ashwin. He suggests that wrist spinners are more likely to succeed than finger spinners on Australian surfaces.

Ravi Bishnoi was selected as one of the standby players for the World Cup. However, the 41-year-old believes that the young leg-spinner should have been included in the 15-man squad and Ashwin should have been in the reserves.

“Ravichandran Ashwin might not get many games at the T20 World Cup as the pitches in Australia are more suited to wrist spinners. They have proved to be more successful on these bouncy tracks.”

“This is why I feel that Ravi Bishnoi would have been a better pick than Ashwin. If India did want to travel with Ashwin, they could have named him as a standby.”

Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian team in T20 World Cup 2022 which will be held in Australia next month. India will begin their World Cup campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in October.
