Earlier, India National Cricket Team won the toss and opted to bowl first in the match. The decision turned out to be a gem of a decision for the side as the Indian bowlers performed exceptionally in the powerplay overs.

The 23-year-old left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh cleaned up Babar Azam for a golden duck on his first-ever World Cup delivery. Also, he dismissed Mohammad Rizwan for a 12-ball 4 in his second over. The senior pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled 3 overs in the powerplay and gave away just 14 runs. At the end of the powerplay, Pakistan were at 32/2.

Then, Shan Masood and Iftikhar Ahmed had a good 76-run partnership in 50 balls with the latter being the aggressor. Iftikhar Ahmed, who accelerated in the latter half of his innings, scored 51 runs off 34 balls, including 2 fours and 4 sixes, before being cleaned up by Mohammed Shami in the 13th over.

In the next over, Hardik Pandya sent back Shadab Khan for 5 and Haider Ali for 2. In the 16th over, all-rounder Hardik also dismissed Mohammad Nawaz for 9.

In the end, Shan Masood scored 52 runs off 42 balls, including 5 fours, while Shaheen Shah Afridi (16) and Haris Rauf (6) chipped in with decent contributions to help Pakistan post 159/8 on the board.

Chasing the target, India were off to a poor start in the match as openers – KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma – failed miserably once again. Star batter Suryakumar Yadav looked good out in the middle, but he scored just 15 runs before being cleaned up by Haris Rauf in the 6th over. Also, Axar Patel got run out for 2 in the 7th over.

In the end, Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya had a sensational 113 runs partnership in 78 balls, before the latter was cleaned up by Mohammad Nawaz in the last over for 40. In the nail-biting last over, India also lost the wicket of Dinesh Karthik. However, when India needed 1 run off 1 ball Ravichandran Ashwin took a single to take India past the finish line.

The modern-day batting great Virat Kohli smashed remarkable 82* runs off 53 balls, including 6 fours and 4 sixes, to bag the Player of the Match award in the nail-biting match.
