India’s Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma had a poor night with both the bat and in the field as their costly misses gave Aiden Markram of South Africa two lives in the close encounter between the two sides on October 30 at Perth Stadium in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022.
Captain Rohit Sharma did nothing wrong as he won the toss and chose to bat first. India made one change as left-arm spinner Axar Patel was replaced in the XI by Deepak Hooda, while South Africa brought in an extra pacer in Lungi Ngidi for Tabraiz Shamsi.
Lungi Ngidi destroyed the Indian top order as he removed Rohit Sharma for 15, KL Rahul made 9, Virat Kohli scored 12 and Hardik Pandya made 2 runs. However, Suryakumar Yadav’s brilliant 68 off 39 balls with 3 sixes and 6 fours helped India put on 133/9 in 20 overs.
Lungi Ngidi took 4/29, while Wayne Parnell took 3/15 in his 4 overs for South Africa.
In reply, Arshdeep Singh hurt South Africa badly as he got Quinton de Kock for 1 and Rilee Russouw, who was coming off a century against Bangladesh, for a duck. Mohammad Shami then accounted for Temba Bavuma. However, Aiden Markram with 52 in 41 balls with 6 fours and 1 six and David Miller with a scintillating half-century brought South Africa back into the game.
Virat Kohli And Rohit Sharma Give Aiden Markram Two Lives As India Falter In The Field
The duo had added 74 runs for the 4th wicket and Aiden Markram lived a charmed life. First came on the 5th ball of the 9th over when David Miller just dabbed a ball to the off side off Hardik Pandya and set off for a run.
But a misunderstanding meant that both batters stood in the middle of the pitch. Rohit Sharma pounced on the ball, took his time, and aimed at the three visible stumps, but failed to hit them.
Then on the 5th ball of the 12th over by R Ashwin, Markram hit a long shot towards mid-wicket where Virat Kohli tried to take the catch reverse cup while going backward and dropped a sitter.
