While the BCCI is drawing special attention towards domestic cricket and has also made it mandatory for cricketers to play in domestic tournaments, former Indian pacer S Sreesanth has opened up on the importance of domestic cricket. The pacer believes upcoming cricketers and young cricketers shall play every domestic cricket match.

S Sreesanth is currently playing for the Rajasthan Legends in the Indian Veteran Premier League 2024. Sreesanth has not played a single international match for India since 2011 and is now seen featuring in league cricket. Sreesanth also commented on the Indian team’s recent fast bowling lineup, which has included few left-arm pacers. The former Indian pacer believes that a left-arm pacer contributes significantly and that there are bowlers who work hard at the domestic level.

S Sreesanth gives his opinion on the importance of playing domestic cricket

S Sreesanth said on the sidelines of IVPL 2024 (as quoted by News18), “It’s very important to play First-Class cricket. All the players should play all the matches, especially domestic cricket. There are surely bowlers who are playing at the domestic level. I’m sure there will be bowlers who will be eager to come and play. I won’t take any names but would say one thing, ‘Mehnat karo, India khel sakte ho’.”

S Sreesanth was part of the Indian squad that won the T20 World Cup 2007 under the leadership of MS Dhoni. Current Indian captain Rohit Sharma was also a part of that side. The former India bowler backed Rohit and is convinced that India will win the T20 World Cup 2024 under Rohit’s captaincy.

He said, “Rohit (Sharma) is a brilliant captain and a brilliant cricketer. This time I’m sure that the T20 World Cup which is going to take place in West Indies and USA, we will win the final for sure.”

BCCI has made it mandatory for players, who are not part of international cricket to play domestic cricket for their respective teams. However, players such as Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, who were supposed to join their domestic sides didn’t do so.

Ishan Kishan opted out of the IND vs ENG Test squad selection and cited mental stiffness as the reason behind the same. However, Kishan has been practicing in Vadodara with Indian team all-rounder Hardik Pandya and will feature in the DY Patil Trophy.

On the other hand, Shreyas Iyer was excluded from the Indian squad after not being able to perform well in the first two Test matches against England. Iyer was supposed to join the Mumbai Ranji team for the knockout round of the Ranji Trophy, however, Iyer didn’t do so by complaining of back stiffness.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was also asked regarding the growing hunger of young cricketers to play Test cricket. Rohit gave a cryptic reply to the question and stated that the ones who do not have the hunger to play Test cricket can be read from their face.

India are currently playing a five-match Test series against England and lead the series by 3-1.
