Star Australian all-rounder Ellyse Perry has been ruled out of the semi-final clash against West Indies in the ICC World Cup 2022. Perry suffered back spasms in the league stage match against South Africa and also missed the final game against Bangladesh in Wellington.
During the South Africa fixture, Perry tumbled over the boundary rope while attempting to field and went off the field, she also didn’t come out to bat as Australia defeated the Proteas women by six wickets.
Unfortunate for Ellyse Perry and the team: Meg Lanning
Australia skipper Meg Lanning confirmed that Perry won’t participate in the semi-final game against the West Indies.
“We’ll go in without her (Ellyse Perry) tomorrow and we’ll keep assessing her if we are to progress in the tournament. So, unfortunate for her and the team, obviously, a big blow but we feel like we’ve got some good depth to be able to cover it and we’re going to have to do that tomorrow,” Lanning said on the eve of the semi-final fixture.
We will keep assessing Ellyse Perry as we go: Meg Lanning
Perry scored 146 runs with the bat and returned with five wickets with the ball. This will be the second time that the Australian all-rounder will miss a semi-final game of an ICC event, she missed the semi-final (vs South Africa) and final match (vs India) owing to a hamstring injury.
Lanning said that Perry hasn’t been able to train sufficiently in the last week but the team will assess her situation and will take a call on playing her in the final if Australia happens to progress.
“Look, she hasn’t done a lot [of training] over the past week, to be fair. She batted a little bit in the nets yesterday and felt okay, but she certainly just wasn’t in a position, unfortunately, to be able to perform at the level needed tomorrow. So, that was why we’ve made the call on that today,” the Australian skipper stated.
“But, to be honest, we haven’t looked too far ahead. We will keep assessing her as we go if we are to progress but the team and the squad is very focused on tomorrow and making sure that we’re putting out our best game because everything else is irrelevant, to be honest.
“I’m sure there’s work going on in the background to try and get her up to play if we were to get through but from a playing-group perspective and coaching staff, we’re just really focused on tomorrow and the players that are going to be able to go out there and perform,” she added.
