ICC Women's World Cup 2022: Watch- West Indies Bowler Shamilia Connell Collapses On Field, Receives Medical Attention

West Indies women’s cricket team pace bowler Shamilia Connell on Friday collapsed on the field during an ICC Women’s World Cup match between West Indies and Bangladesh at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

During the 47th over of Bangladesh’s innings, Deandra Dottin was about to bowl her final delivery of the over before all the teammates ran towards Connell, who was positioned near the mid-wicket region and immediately the team medical staff arrived on the field to examine the player’s condition.

Connell was seen clutching her stomach and gradually got up on her feet before she climbed into the mini ambulance and was reportedly taken to a hospital, as mentioned by New Zealand commentator Simon Doull on air.

Stable and the medical personnel is taking care of her: Stafanie Taylor gives updates Shamilia Connell’s condition

The match resumed after Connell left the stadium and West Indies bowled out Bangladesh at 136 in 49.3 overs to win the match by four runs in a thrilling manner. After the match, West Indies skipper Stafanie Taylor said Connell is stable and the medical staff is with her.

“Stable and the medical personnel is taking care of her (Shamilia Connell). It was sad to see her go down but we look at the bright side, it was probably for us to regroup and we did that and changed the momentum,” Taylor said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

Connell just bowled three overs in the match and conceded 15 runs without any wicket. Hayley Matthews picked four wickets and Aly Fletcher added three to help West Indies clinch their third victory of the tournament.

Earlier wicketkeeper-batter Shermaine Campbell’s unbeaten 53 helped the team to post a sizeable total of 140 in the first innings after they were reduced to 102/8 in 44 overs.

West Indies will play their next match against Bismah Maroof-led Pakistan on March 21 at the Seddon Park in Hamilton.
