ICC World Test Championship News
The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) is the premier tournament in Test cricket. It is a biennial competition and is organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The governing body was under immense pressure to take big steps in order to stop the steep decline in Test cricket's popularity due to the meteoric rise of T20 cricket. The answer from the ICC was WTC and the decision seems to have made a big impact so far. The competition has given a context to most of the Test matches played nowadays and has managed to attract the fans to Test format once again.
Every cycle of the WTC is played across two years before the winner is decided by a one-off final. The tournament's format follows a league stage, where teams earn points across bilateral series, before a final is played between the top two teams.
According to the existing rules, the team nine teams in the ICC Test rankings are allowed in the competition. Each team plays six series - three at home and three away - during a cycle. The number of Test matches is decided by the competing teams.
Teams are placed in the points table on the basis of the percentage of points won rather than the total number of points. The teams get 12 points for a win, six for a tie and four for a draw. So, a win is 100%, a tie is 50% and a draw is 33.3%.
ICC WTC News:
While the bilateral series is conducted by the host nation, the final is conducted by the ICC. New Zealand won the first WTC final with a win over India. The second WTC cycle was played from 2021 to 2023 and was won by Australia. In the third cycle that took place from 2023 to 2025, Australia and South Africa made the cut for the final.
