ICC World Test Championship Cricket Teams 2025

The ICC World Test Championship (ICC WTC) is the premier championship in the Test format. It is a biennial tournament and is organized by the ICC. The first edition of the championship was played from 2019 to 2021 while the second one took place from 2021 to 2023.

The third edition was played from 2023 to 2025. The format of the championship comprises a league stage followed by the final. The teams earn points during the bilateral series. At the end of the league stage, the top two teams qualify for the final. 

New Zealand won the inaugural WTC edition with a win over India in the final. India qualified for the final in the second edition too but lost the game against Australia. In the third final, Australia and South Africa will face each other.

ICC WTC Teams:

The top nine teams in the ICC Test Rankings are allowed to participate in the ICC WTC. In the first three editions of the WTC, the same nine teams have participated. The teams are - Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka and West Indies.

Even though Zimbabwe, Ireland and Afghanistan are also full members of the ICC, they are yet to play in the WTC. They are included in the ICC Future Tours Programme and play Test matches during the WTC cycle but those games do not have any impact on the WTC.

In the inaugural WTC cycle, India and New Zealand finished in the top two and qualified for the final. New Zealand beat India by 8 wickets to become the first-ever WTC champions.

In the second edition, Australia and India finished in the top two. With 66.67 points percentage, Australia were the only team to cross the 60% mark while India finished the league stage with 58.80%. In the final, Australia beat India by 209 runs to win their maiden WTC title.

South Africa and Australia finished as the top two teams after the league stage in the third WTC cycle. South Africa ended with 69.44% while Australia had 67.54%. No other team could even cross the 50% mark during the third cycle.
