Legendary India National Cricket Team off-spinner Harbhajan Singh lavished praise on the opening batsman Shubman Gill for his spectacular knock in the first ODI of the three-match series against Australia on Friday, 22 September, at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali, Chandigarh.

Gill played an innings of the highest quality in front of his home crowd in Mohali. He smashed a stunning 74 runs off 63 deliveries, including 6 fours and 2 sixes, and was involved in a huge 142-run stand with Ruturaj Gaikwad.

Speaking on his official YouTube channel, Harbhajan Singh said that Gill showed in the first ODI what a Punjabi guy can do in his own den. He said:

“Shubman Gill showed what a typical Punjabi guy can do in his own den. He made great use of home conditions and scored a sensational 74.”

The innings played by Gill laid the foundation for India’s successful run-chase of 277 runs against the visitors. After India lost 4 wickets in the second innings, stand-in skipper KL Rahul joined forces with Suryakumar Yadav to guide his side to a 5-wicket win.

Gaikwad played really well – Harbhajan Singh

Harbhajan was also impressed with Gill’s opening partner for the first two ODIs, Ruturaj Gaikwad. He said that the opening batsman batted extremely well and his partnership with Gill rattled the opposition. Gaikwad scored 71 runs off 77 balls, with 10 boundaries. He said:

“It’s never easy for anyone to perform when he comes into the team after a long time. But Gaikwad played really well. His partnership with Shubman Gill put Australia on the back foot and the bowlers were left searching for answers.”

Harbhajan further talked about Suryakumar Yadav, who hit a terrific half-century in the first ODI after going through a lean patch in the format. He stated:

“I had told already that Suryakumar Yadav could play that role at No. 6 of a finisher and that’s exactly what he did. He came to bat at that position and ensured that he finished the game with a half-century.”

The second ODI is set to be hosted by the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on September 24.
